Makeup Expiry Dates // Do you really go by them?

I think everyone is guilty of keeping a piece of makeup when really it should be thrown away. It might be that one expensive mascara you love that you keep for an extra month or so or that gorgeous eyeshadow you've had for way over it's expiry date but, it's been discontinued so you can't bring yourself to throw it away! We are all guilty and I know there is definitely a few things in my collection that I really should throw out! Apparently 50% of us don't throw make up away after the expiry date because we think it is a waste!

Debenhams recently did a survey to find out the truth behind how long we keep our makeup for! I'm going to share with you a few parts of the survey that stood out to me!

Eyeliner is one product that I have never been too sure about how to long to keep! Thankfully none of my eyeliners are over 1 year old, this is one product that I definitely would be wary about keeping for longer than the recommended time. Imagine using eyeliner that has gone out of date on your waterline?!

Foundation is another product that I wasn't too sure about! I thought you could keep foundations for longer than 6 months! Did you know about this one? I don't wear foundation everyday or even every other day so I'm not sure if I would finish a foundation in 6 months?

Now this is one that I knew about! I don't keep mascaras any longer than 6 months from the date I start using them! Are you guilty of keeping them for longer than recommended?

Those are my highlights from the survey! Did you know about all of these recommended expiry dates and do you stick to them?

Thanks for reading,
Shona x

  1. Very interesting post! I definitely stick to the guidelines when it comes to mascara and I never keep lipsticks for too long but as for the rest...I think I should make a trip to Debenhams and replenish my make-up bag!

  2. I loved this, I never realised how long you're supposed to keep foundation for. Definitely having a huge clear out today.

  3. This is so useful! I did know about mascaras and swap and change regularly (which is a pain when they get so expensive) but didn't really know what to expect with foundations :)

    1. Glad I could help! I think everyone knows about mascara but like you and others have said you aren't sure about foundation! xx

  4. I personally think this is really wasteful! As long as you don't keep products open to the air and clean your make-up brushes then it's fine. If you're really worried about what's going on your skin then start with the ingredients instead.

    1. To a certain extend it is a little wasteful but at the same time i don't want to be putting a mascara wand full of bacteria near my eye! x

    2. All those preservatives will see to that bacteria :)

  5. I'm so guilty of all of the above. I've had my favourite eyeliner for ages and they've discontinued it. And I dread to think how old my foundation is... I just use it so rarely! At least it's in a tube though!
I always think dirty unwashed brushes must be too. Are there any good tutorials out there for cleaning them?
Great post, gunna have a mooch around more! :)

    1. I can 100% understand why people keep discontinued makeup especially if they love it, I'm not sure if I'd do the same when it comes to eyeliner though, maybe have a look online on discounted makeup stores to see if somewhere sells it?
Just search how to clean your brushes and loads of results will come up, maybe look on youtube? I just use a baby shampoo and a ELF spray brush cleaner for spot cleaning :)
      Thanks! xx

  6. I've certainly been guilty of keeping products way past when I should have thrown them away in the past! I did a post similar to this back in May looking at the PAO symbol (the little can type symbol on products) shelf lives, expiry dates and the cosmetics calculator which is an amazing little tool I found on the internet. After I did that post I went through all my stuff and threw out a load of products I'd had for YEARS! :)
